slum kingdom

Posted by
shoti (somewhere in, China) on 21 April 2010 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

the view from LRT( light rail transit ) Blumentritt station. This place (Blumentritt) is prominent in terms of petty crimes, e.g. stabbing, snatching. I used to live very near this place and every time I tell fellow Manilenos about it, they ask me "haven't you been stabbed there?" . My answer is always no. Right now, I believe Manila is much more safer than it was before.

This looks like a scene from Slumdog Millionaire. Nice treatment pare. Sayang. Balak ko sana kumuha ng ganito kaya lang naunahan mo na ako. hahaha! ganda!

I like this view a lot ! i just regret this bath of color that melts everything down and prevents us to see the very details as clearly as i would have loved but i guess you chose it on purpose and respect your choice absolutely : would you explain its reason for you ? Time passing metaphor or something that kind ?

@k@: Hi Karine. This photograph was taken 3/07/07. every time I look at it, I feel nothing's wrong with it so I left it as it is. There was no post-processing done on this image. I just set the camera to Sepia mode then clicked. I think I used it to reflect the heat of the day, the ugly nature of this place, or maybe I just felt Sepia looked beautiful on this kind of image. As this is one of those few images that I didn't altered in any way, I refuse to change it now, though I understand your point. I'm glad you shared your view on this Karine, thanks :)

I'm really impressed by this picture, it must be hard to live here with the constant danger. Splendid treatment. 5 *. Good day.

@tede: you bet it is. not only they have to deal with the dangers of nature's wrath but they also have to be mindful of when the city authorities will destroy their 'houses' . also, there's the danger of diseases, muggings, and many other petty crimes. it's a hard life out there.

That is a great viewpoint... sad when you live there of course.
Excellent in sepia... looks vintage.

This has a very.. old feel to it. LIke maybe 1920's or so.. probably due to the lack of cars.

Oh wow it sounds quite scary living here, but I guess people are used to it and people who lives here know each other that they exempt their neighbors from their crimes. It is very interesting.
